7 Packing Tips That Save Hours on Moving Day

By Sam · Finally Movers · May 26, 2026 · 1 min read

Packing is where most moves go sideways. A little strategy up front saves hours (and a few headaches) on the big day.

Start with what you don't use

Begin with the closet, the garage, and the bookshelf — anything you won't touch before moving day. Label every box on the side, not the top, so you can read it when boxes are stacked.

Pack room by room

Keep one room's contents in clearly-marked boxes. It makes unloading — and unpacking — dramatically faster.

  • Heavy items (books, tools) → small boxes
  • Light, bulky items (linens, pillows) → large boxes
  • Fill gaps with towels so nothing shifts

Pack a "first-night" box

Phone chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, snacks, and the coffee maker. Load it last so it comes off the truck first.

Pro tip: photograph the back of your TV and electronics before unplugging — reconnecting is a breeze.
